FAREWELL TO A TITAN. The death of George Quaintance from a fatal heart attack on November 9, 1957 has brought sadness throughout the entire physical culture world. For many years a portrait painter, Mr. Quaintance began to do physique work just as a hobby. With the publication of his first group physique study "Hovasu Creek" in the first issue of Physique Pictorial, the name of Quaintance caught the country by storm, and an insatiable demand for his work began. A perfectionist, he drove himself unmercifully, slaving days and nights on end (taking benzidrene to stay awake) to finish a painting, or a sculpture piece. His body couldnt take the beating and his health broke down many times, and still he was driven by the indomitable drive to create. Hundreds of others have tried to follow in his footsteps of glorifying the male physique, and

these he always encouraged and helped whenever he could. Throughout the world he has been acclaimed as the trailblazer of a culture which has been almost ignored for twenty centuries. Many times in the past, completely unfounded rumours of the death of Quaintance have mysteriously been circulated, and we only wish that this also was "just a rumour." But Quaintance will never really die. In each of his pointings he has put something of himself--it is almost as if he played out his life before its time by giving up so much of himself. Few have been able to leave a legacy so rich as he has. Contributions to the heart fund are suggested as a memorial to George Quaintance.

The Quaintance Studio will remain in operation and all of his work will continue to be available under the management of his assistant, Victor Garcia. Because of the current confusion of inheritance, escrow etc., it will be appreciated if all checks to the Quaintance Studios are made payable directly to Victor Garcia. The address of the studios remains the same: Box 2236 Terminal Annex, Los Angeles 54, California.

WILL PHYSIQUE PICTORIAL BE PUNISHED FOR "SHOOTING OFF ITS MOUTH?" We have been warned that certain dishonest politicians are burnt up about being criticized by a "dirty little rag" and that they intend to do something to shut us up--if necessary to manufacture some trouble. This was done once several years ago by a slimy scandal reporter in Los Angeles with a television program patterned after Confidential magazine. Having powerful backing, he was able to cause a perverted vice-squad officer to vist the PP offices and attempt to purchase nudes which of course were not available. The officer then asked if any of our advertisers might have them, but we replied we thought not. However, it later turned out that the policeman had been able to purchase nudes from one of the advertisers earlier in the day, even though the latter had given us his ossurance he never sold such. In court, the officer testified that PP's editor had directed him to the other photographer. We demanded a lie detector test, but the judge who off record freely admitted his prejudice in the case refused the test. It was necessary to take the case into a Superior court, where the lower court judge was overruled and PP was completely vindicated. PP was represented by on ACLU attorney. The vice squad officer 'who had given the false testimony was subsequently arrested and sentenced on charges of child molestation.

The same newspaper reporter talked on the phone with a model who had been in the magazine and suggested he bring a lawsuit against PP (brazenly ignoring the law against agitating a low suit-baritry.) The young man foolishly followed the advice with visions of getting a great deal of money, since had had recently been disappointed in losing the affections of a well-to-do girl friend. He piously claimed that he had been ruined in the eyes of the church and made other ridiculous claims which the court saw through, refusing to award him the $35,000 which he felt his injured reputation was worth. PP's editor inferred that the young man's attorney was illiterate, and the latter currently has a case in court against the editor in which is has asked the court to give him the latter's personal home.
